I went to see some live local theatre last night, and it was fantastic. Not because it was a flawless production, but because the room was buzzing with an infectious, positive energy. A group of young, passionate actors and directors had poured their hearts into a show, and their friends had all turned up to cheer them on. It was a powerful reminder of why we create things in the first place: to connect.

And yet, as I watched, I saw the beautiful, inevitable mistakes we all make when we’re starting out. The cast was too close to the material, too familiar with the script. They understood the inside jokes and the emotional beats so intimately that they forgot to build the bridge for an audience seeing it for the first time. The staging was functional, but it didn’t transport you. The experience for the audience was driven by their personal connection to the performers, not by the design of the performance itself.

This is what I call the “Creator’s Blind Spot.” When you are the one with the vision, you live inside of it. You fill in the gaps automatically. You feel the emotion because it’s your emotion. You understand the message because it’s your message.

The challenge is that your audience doesn’t have your memories or your context. They only have what you present to them.

This is where passion, while essential, proves it is not enough. To truly move an audience, passion needs a partner: experience.
